The First Youth Ecology Forum of the Chinese Journal of Applied Ecology, Chinese Journal of Ecology, and Ecological Processes was successfully held in Fuzhou on April 13, 2024, co-hosted by the School of Geographic Sciences and the School of Carbon-Neutral and Future Technology of our university, in collaboration with the Shenyang Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Ecological Society of China. Over 700 participants, including invited experts, young scholars from prestigious universities and research institutions nationwide, attended the forum. Among them were Academician Yu Guirui, President of the Ecological Society of China and Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Journal of Applied Ecology; Academician Zhu Jiaogun, Director of the Shenyang Institute of Applied Ecology and Editor-in-Chief of Ecological Processes; Professor Chen Jiquan, Co-Editor-in-Chief of Ecological Processes; Researcher Jia Yongfeng, Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Journal of Ecology; Vice President Yang Yusheng of our university; and the directors of both host schools.
In his opening remarks, Academician Yu Guirui emphasized that the forum serves not only as an academic exchange platform for experts and scholars in ecology but also as a catalyst for enhanced collaboration among research institutes, universities, and journals in related fields. He expressed his hope that the young ecologists participating in the forum would utilize this platform to deepen their academic exchanges and collectively contribute to advancing the discipline of ecology and China's ecological conservation efforts.
Academician Zhu Jiaojun underscored the critical role of scientific journals in supporting, promoting, and leading scientific and technological innovation and academic development. He saw these journals as vital platforms for academic exchanges and showcases for innovative achievements. He anticipated that the forum would provide an encouraging forum for young Chinese ecologists to grow and contribute their wisdom and strength to ecological conservation in the new era.
Yang Yusheng introduced the university's basic situation and recent achievements. He highlighted the significance of gathering young ecology experts and scholars from across the country to discuss fundamental theories, disciplinary trends, cutting-edge topics, technological methods, and practical applications in ecology. He encouraged the young scholars to seize this opportunity to build consensus, gather wisdom, and jointly promote high-quality development in ecological research.
After the opening ceremony, invited speakers including Yu Guirui, Zhu Jiaogun, Chen Jiquan, and Jia Yongfeng delivered keynote speeches on topics such as Chinese Ecological Environmental Governance and Ecological Economic System Construction in the New Era, Protected Forests Ecology and Management, Albedo-Induced Warming Beyond Greenhouse Gases, and Trace Elements Ecology, respectively.
In the main conference sessions, professors from various institutions, including Lin Wenxiong from Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, Xing Yaowu from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhang Jian from East China Normal University, Feng Zhaozhong from Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Liu Xueyan and Lv Xiaotao from Tianjin University, and Wu Fuzhong from our university, presented their research findings on diverse topics such as the root micro-ecological mechanisms underlying low-carbon discharge in ultra-high-yield regenerative rice, the evolutionary history of global mountain plant diversity, mountain biodiversity and dynamic geobotanical thought, the ecological effects of ozone pollution in China, isotope tracing of nitrogen cycling processes in plant-soil systems, the impacts of nitrogen inputs on grassland ecology and production, and the mechanisms of subtropical forest type conversion on soil carbon turnover.
At the conclusion of the forum, Researcher Zeng Dehui, Director of the Editorial Departments of the three journals, briefly outlined the journals' work, while Liu Du from Springer Group provided insights into publication trends and journal selection in the field of ecology.
It is reported that the forum's parallel sessions featured 22 specialized topics, with 360 experts, teachers, and students delivering presentations covering a wide range of areas, including forest ecology, landscape ecology, agroecology, pollution ecology, wetland ecology, global change ecology, grassland ecology, plant ecology, soil ecology, trace element ecology, and mangrove research.
